The Minnesota softball team won its two games Friday at the Clearwater Parks and Rec. Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. The Gophers defeated Syracuse, 3-0, and New Mexico, 1-0 in nine innings. Minnesota completed pool play with a 3-1 record and evened its overall record to 12-12 for the season.

The Gophers played a classic pitcher's duel against New Mexico, with Minnesota's Angie Recknor and New Mexico's Danielle Cassara matching zeroes until the bottom of the ninth inning. With the international tiebreaker, the Gophers' Morgan Holden started the inning at second base. Tammi Hays and Veronica Roberts each hit bunt singles to load the bases. Angel Braden followed with a single to left field, scoring Holden with the game's only run. Recknor allowed three hits and struck out seven batters in her fifth shutout of the season. She retired the final 14 Lobo batters of the game. Minnesota co-head coach Lisa Bernstein recorded her 300th victory as a Gopher head coach.

Earlier in the day, Recknor scattered seven hits in a shutout win against Syracuse. Minnesota scored one run in the fifth inning, as Jordanne Nygren's two-out single scored Roberts from second base. The Gophers added two runs in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Braden and a passed ball. Syracuse loaded the bases with two out in the seventh inning but failed to score.

The Gophers were seeded fourth among the 15 teams for championship bracket play. Minnesota will play Seton Hall in the first round of the championship bracket Saturday at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the championship quarterfinal at 5 p.m., while the loser will play in the consolation bracket beginning at 3 p.m.
