WRESTLERS IN FOURTH AFTER DAY ONE

havThe No. 2-ranked University of Minnesota wrestlers are in fourth place at the 2000 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo., after the first day of competition. The Golden Gophers have 28.5 points and have six wrestlers competing in the quarterfinal round tomorrow morning and two others competing in the wrestlebacks tomorrow morning.

Oklahoma State is winning the team competition with 38 points. The Cowboys have all 10 wrestlers still alive, including seven in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Iowa is in second with 33.5 points with six wrestlers in the quarterfinals and three others in consolation brackets. Iowa State is third with 30 points and six wrestlers alive in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore All-American Leroy Vega advanced to the quarterfinal bracket and will face Oklahoma State's Jeff Ragan tomorrow at 125 points. Freshman Jared Lawrence will wrestle Lehigh's Dave Esposito, the fifth seed, tomorrow at 149 pounds. At 157 pounds, freshman Luke Becker will face No. 1 seed T.J. Williams of Iowa and at 165 pounds, junior Brad Pike will face No. 1 seed Iowa State's Joe Heskett.

Senior All-American Brandon Eggum advanced to the quarterfinals and will face Rider's Shawn Scannell tomorrow morning at 184 pounds. And at heavyweight, senior Brock Lesnar the No. 1 seed will face Ohio's Tim Courtad tomorrow.

Alive in the wrestlebacks is junior Brett Lawrence, who will face James Madison's Mike Coyle tomorrow morning at 133 pounds. Also competing in wrestlebacks is sophomore Owen Elzenat 197 pounds.
