GOPHER SOFTBALL WINS CLEARWATER TOURNAMENT, DEFEATS SOUTH FLORIDA IN FINAL

In the championship game against South Florida, the Gophers scored all three of their runs with two out in the fifth inning. Veronica Roberts singled to left field and Angel Braden was hit by a pitch. Jordanne Nygren doubled to the right-field fence, scoring Roberts and Braden. Christine Lindberg's single up the middle scored Nygren with the Gophers' third run. Angie Recknor and Megan Hautala scattered nine hits in a combined shutout. Hautala pitched the final three innings to improve her record to 4-0.
In the semifinal game against Illinois-Chicago, Minnesota scored runs in the first two innings and held on to defeat the Flames. In the first inning, Roberts hit a one-out single to right field. Braden advanced Roberts to second on a groundout, and Nygren followed with a single to score Roberts. Shelly Nichols led off the second inning with her first collegiate home run to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead. Illinois-Chicago's Stephanie Christoferson homered to lead off the seventh inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Roberts threw out Illinois-Chicago's Gina Arnold at the plate from right field to end the game. Recknor pitched a complete game to even her record at 12-12.
Minnesota will play a doubleheader at Akron on Saturday at 12 noon.
