GOPHER GOLFERS COMPETE AT THE RAINBOW WAHINE INVITATIONAL

INVIGOLDEN GOPHERS TO COMPETE AT HAWAII - Minnesota competes at the University of Hawaii's Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Tuesday-Thursday in Waimanalo, Oahu.

THE RAINBOW WAHINE INVITATIONAL - Thirteen teams are scheduled to compete: No. 1 Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, No. 20 Oklahoma, No. 9 Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Osaka Gakuin, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 3 USC, Texas- El Paso, Texas Tech and Weber State.

The format is a 54-hole tournament, with 18 holes played each day on the Olomana Golf Course (par 72).

LAST COMPETITION - Junior Katie Bakken (Brooklyn Center, Minn./Brooklyn Center) won the individual title at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Winter Park, Fla. Bakken fired a final-round 77 for a two-round total of 5-over- par 147, defeating Amanda Beeler of Arkansas State by one stroke. It is the first collegiate title for Bakken.

As a team, the Gophers finished in sixth place among 15 teams with a two-day total of 627. Michigan State was the team winner with a total of 608, followed by Kent's total of 612 strokes. Newcomer Karyn Stordahl (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) equaled Bakken's 77 on Tuesday and finished with a total of 154, good for a tie for 13th place. Sophomore Cindy Cannon (Big Lake, Minn./ Monticello) was 32nd at 160, sophomore Kristin Dooley (Albany, Minn./Albany) was 61st at 168 and sophomore Megan Stier (Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine) was 64th at 170.

STARTING OUT RIGHT - The Gophers won the Minnesota Invitational on Sept. 13 at the Les Bolstad Golf Course, outlasting Eastern Michigan in one playoff hole. Minnesota rebounded from a seven-shot deficit in the final round to force the playoff.

UP NEXT - Minnesota competes at Indiana on April 8-9.
