The University of Minnesota men's basketball office announced today that Assistant Coach Derek Thomas has resigned. Thomas was in charge of recruiting and was the team's defensive coordinator.

"I have enjoyed my time at Minnesota and will relish the friendships I made," said Thomas. "I have the utmost confidence that Dan (Monson) has the Minnesota program headed in the right direction and I wish him and the rest of the staff all the best."

Director of Basketball Operations Art Prevost has been appointed to the position vacated by Thomas. Prevost has been in charge of day-to-day operations for the Golden Gopher basketball program, as well as coordinating the team's on-campus recruiting visits. He was the top coaching assistant and in charge of recruiting at Texas Christian University for the women's team from 1996-99. During that period, Prevost signed four junior college All-Americans to the Horned Frog program, and his recruiting class was perennially ranked among the top 25 in the nation. Every year he was on the staff at TCU, Prevost had an all-league perimeter player on the program. He was one of the top recruiters on the men's staff while at Lamar University from 1989-90 and 1991-92 Prevost's '91-92 recruiting class was ranked 15th in the nation.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for me to work with a top-notch coach and program," said Prevost. "I am very excited about my change in duties and will give everything I have to help Dan Monson bring Minnesota basketball back to national prominence."

"I want what is best for the people I work with," said Head Coach Dan Monson. "I am excited for Derek and the opportunity that he has to work closer to where his family lives. I feel fortunate that I have someone on my staff in Art Prevost who can step right in and do the job all the while maintaining the continuity that we have established since I took the Minnesota position."
