GOPHERS DROP SOFTBALL GAME TO NORTHWESTERN, 4-1

Northwestern used a walk, a sacrifice and a double by Gretchen Barnes to score a second-inning run and take a 1-0 lead. The Gophers tied the game in the fourth inning with a Shelly Nichols single, a sacrifice and a two-out double by Christine Lindberg. The Wildcats took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Barnes singled home pinch-runner Stacey Austin. Barnes scored later in the inning on a Minnesota fielding error. Northwestern's Jenn Schull singled home the Wildcats' final run in the sixth inning.
Brie Brown improved to 5-7 for Northwestern, pitching a complete-game four-hitter, walking two and striking out four. Angie Recknor pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for Minnesota and took the loss, falling to 17-15 for the season. Shull and Barnes each had two hits for Northwestern, while Nichols had two of the Gophers' four hits.
The Gophers will conclude their two-game series against Northwestern with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Minnesota Softball Stadium.
