GOPHERS THIRD AT ARIZONA'S JIM CLICK SHOOTOUT

throwsSenior Nicole Chimko won two events and junior Aubrey Schmitt gave Minnesota a third win in the throws, while the 4x400-meter relay team set a school record in posting a victory as the Gophers finished third at the Jim Click Shootout.

Host Arizona won the meet with 202 points followed by California with 158, edgining the Gophers by a single point.

In winning both the javelin and discus throws, Chimko registered NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Her throw of 170 feet, 11 inches in the javelin was nearly 13 feet better than her nearest competitor. She won the discus by more than 30 feet with an effort of 155-0.

Schmitt had a provisional qualifying effort in the shot put. The two-time defending Big Ten outdoor champion won the event with a thrw of 51-6 1/4. The 4x400 relay team broke a school record that had stood for nearly 11 years. Senior Ali Gartner, along with sophomore Amber Day and Jessica Shuster, and frosh Shani Marks cruised to a seven-second victory in three minutes, 43.41 seconds, eclipsing the previous record of 3:46.29.

Minnesota got one other NCAA provisional qualifying effort Saturday. Senior Beth Howard was second in the hammer throw with an effort of 186-7.
