GOPHER SOFTBALL LOSES TWO GAMES AT DRAKE

In the opener, Drake pitcher Carol Thompson blanked the Gophers on four hits. She walked one and struck out six in her second shutout of the season. Bulldog catcher Jayme McDonald drove in runs in the fourth and sixth innings with a pair of triples. Minnesota center fielder Tammi Hays had two of the four hits for the Gophers.
Minnesota scored single runs in each of the first three innings and took a 3-2 lead. Drake score two fifth-inning runs to take a 4-3 lead, but the Gophers tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Minnesota catcher Meghan Smith, who hit her first home run of the season in the second inning, singled in Amy Hafemeyer with the game-tying run. The Bulldogs won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a throwing error by Smith. Hays, Smith and Shelley Nichols each had two hits for the Gophers in the nightcap.
Minnesota travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to play a non-conference doubleheader at Northern Iowa on Thursday at 3 p.m.
