MINNESOTA DEFEATS NORTHWESTERN 12-5 TO EARN SERIES SPILT

Senior second baseman Mark Devore had a career-high four RBIs on the day going 4-for-5 from the plate. Josh Holthaus was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Minnesota put four runs on the board in the first inning as the Golden Gophers sent eight men to the plate. Devore's first hit of the game in the inning scored two to put Minnesota up 4-0.

Minnesota went up 5-0 in the top of the fourth. Lead-off batter Chris Guetzlaff doubled down the left field line. Devore then singled to left field scoring Guetzlaff.

After Northwestern cut the lead to 5-2, the Golden Gophers scored four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to open up a 9-2 lead. They would add a single run in the seventh and a pair of runs in the eight en route to the 12-5 victory.

Gopher starting pitcher Ben Birk cruised through the first three innings of the game retiring the first nine batters he faced. Birk got touched for two runs, one earned, in the bottom of the fourth. C.J. Woodrow relieved Birk in the fourth and pitched three innings to earn his second victory of the season.

Minnesota will play the Minnesota State, Mankato Mavericks at Siebert Field on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
