Gopher starting pitcher Chadd Clarey had his second straight tough outing for Minnesota. In just 1 2/3 innings pitched, Clarey yielded seven runs on five hits and was relieved by Bob DeWitt in the second inning. Clarey ran into trouble in the first inning giving up a one-out double to Eric Lonnquist and walking Tim Huber to put runners on first and second. Cory Ranweiler then doubled to the gap in left center scoring Lonnquist and Huber to give the Mavericks an early 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks got to Clarey for five more runs in the top of the second. Tim Huber hit a two-run single followed by a Cory Ranweiler single that scored Eric Lonnquist from second base. Josh Hinson singled scoring two more runs to make it a 7-0 game. MSU, Mankato extended the lead to 11-0 with two runs in each the fifth and sixth innings. Minnesota did not get on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning when Luke Appert would score from third on a Scott Howard ground out.
MSU, Mankato's starting pitcher Tim Tutko pitched six strong innings for the Mavericks, holding the Minnesota bats to only one run on one hit. Reliever Ryan Krautkremer pitched a perfect seventh inning, before Jason Heimerl gave up two hits and a run in the bottom of the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Minnesota started to rally as Mike Arlt led off the inning with a double to right-center field. Arlt would later score on Paul Hartmann's first career home run, a shot to right-center field. Chris Guetzlaff kept the inning alive with a single. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He would later score on Mark Devore's ground out. With two down in the inning and Luke Appert at third base, Appert broke for home on a ball that got away from Maverick catcher Scott Gieger. But Gieger tracked down the ball and threw to pitcher Keith Meyers, who tagged Appert out at home plate to end the threat for the Gophers in the inning.
Minnesota will host the Iowa Hawkeyes in a four-game Big Ten series starting Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Siebert Field.
