GOPHERS SPLIT BIG TEN SOFTBALL TWINBILL WITH BUCKEYES

In the opener, the Gophers rallied from a 2-1 deficit with seven unanswered runs. In the third inning, Minnesota scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Veronica Roberts singled home Tammi Hays to tie the game at 2-2. Jordanne Nygren singled to score Roberts and give Minnesota a 3-2 lead. With two outs, Michelle Bennett singled up the middle to score Angel Braden and Nygren to cap the inning. Shelly Nichols hit a two-run home run, her second of the season, in the fifth inning to increase the Minnesota lead to 7-2. Braden homered to lead off the seventh inning, her third of the season, to close the scoring. Braden and Nygren each had two hits to lead an eight-hit attack. Recknor limited the Buckeyes to three hits and struck out five batters in winning her 21st game.
In the nightcap, the Gophers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a triple by Morgan Holden and a single by Bennett. Ohio State scored in each of the next four innings, tallying nine runs to invoke the eight-run rule after six innings.
Minnesota travels to Penn State for a single game Saturday night at 5 p.m.
