4/23/2000 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Penn State scored the only run of the first game on a squeeze bunt in the second inning. Minnesota pitcher Angie Recknor limited the Nittany Lions to three hits and struck out six batters. She broke the Minnesota single-season record for strikeouts during the opener and has 193 strikeouts for the season. Jordanne Nygren's single in the fourth inning was Minnesota's only hit in the opener.
In the nightcap, Minnesota built a 6-0 lead and held on for a split of the doubleheader. Michelle Bennett drove in Veronica Roberts for a first-inning run, and Angel Braden's fourth home run of the year in the third inning gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead. The Gophers exploded for four runs in the fourth inning, scoring three on a Penn State throwing error and the final run on a single by Braden. Recknor threw the first 5 2/3 innings for her 22nd win of the season, and Meagan Hautala recorded the final four outs for her first collegiate save.
Minnesota will host Concordia-St. Paul in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Minnesota Softball Stadium.
