Five Golden Gophers went 2-for-4 on the night and senior Nate Bennett picked up his first win of season as Minnesota (27-16, 12-4) defeated the Iowa State Cyclones (16-29, 6-15) on Wednesday night by a score of 5-3 at Siebert Field.

Iowa State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Joe Ferin scored on Rob Conway's ground out. The Cyclones went up 2-0 in the second inning as Ben Van Iderstine scored on Ferin's sacrifice fly.

Junior Josh Holthaus cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when he jumped on Iowa State pitcher Dave Rossman's first pitch, and deposited it over the left field fence for his team-leading seventh home run of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mike Arlt laced a single to centerfield that went right between the legs of pitcher Dave Rossman, which scored Jason Kennedy from second and Josh Holthaus from third to give Minnesota a 3-2 lead.

The Cyclones would tie up the game in the top of the fifth inning with a Joe Urban sacrifice fly to right field that scored catcher Ryan Wickman. Minnesota would take the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning when Rick Brosseau's single to left would score Scott Howard from second base to give the Golden Gophers a 4-3 lead. Minnesota added an insurance run in bottom of the sixth when pinch-hitter David Roach doubled to the gap in right-centerfield scored Jason Kennedy.

The Golden Gophers sent six pitchers to the mound in the game. The last four pitchers shut down the Cyclones allowing no runs on four hits over the final 4 2/3 innings. Senior Nathan Bennett picked up the win, his first of the season. Vince Gangl relieved Bob DeWitt in the top of the eight inning, and pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to record his first save of the season. Iowa State starter Dave Rossman gave up five runs on 12 hits and took the loss to drop his record to 2-2.

Minnesota travels to East Lansing, Mich. for a four-game series with the Michigan State Spartans starting Friday evening.
