GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLERS HONORED AT AWARDS BANQUET

The Golden Gophers, who ended the 1999-2000 season ranked second in the nation with an overall record of 17-2 and a second place finish in the Big Ten at 7-1, produced six wrestlers who placed in the top ten of their weight classes at the NCAA Championships. Senior Brock Lesnar, who took the nation by storm last season, was both the Division I National Champion and Big Ten Champion of the heavyweight division while senior Brandon Eggum placed third (184), sophomore Leroy Vega took fifth (125), Luke Becker (157) and Jared Lawrence (149) each placed sixth, and Brad Pike (165) finished seventh.
Recipients of awards distributed at this year's event are as follows: Most Dedicated - Owen Elzen, Brett Lawrence; Freshman Academic - Jacob Volkmann; Upper Classman Academic - Owen Elzen; Fraser Dean Award - Brandon Eggum; Most Outstanding Freshman</ B> - Jared Lawrence, Luke Becker; Most Exciting - Jared Lawrence; Most Outstanding - Brock Lesnar; Most Valuable - Brandon Eggum; Most Improved/ Chris Berglin Award - Brad Pike; Verne Gagne Leadership/Scholarship Award</ B> - Leroy Vega
