CHIMKO WINS JAVELIN AT DRAKE RELAYS

feet,Minnesota senior Nicole Chimko won the javelin to lead the Gophers in the first day of the 91st annual Drake Relays.

Her winning throw of 161 feet, five inches, was an NCAA provisional qualifying effort and won the event by nearly nine feet. Ranked sixth nationally, Chimko's throw was her second-best effort of the season.

In the triple, senior and defending champion Christine Gulbrandsen made her outdoor season debut with a leap of 41-10 1/4, tying for third place in the event. Her jump was also an NCAA provisional qualifying effort.

Minnesota's 4x100-meter relay team of senior Neketa Sears, sophomores Amber Day and Jessica Shuster and frosh Shani Marks qualified for Saturday's finals, winning its heat in 47.28 seconds.

The Gophers' distance medley relay squad of seniors Rasa Michniovaite and Alissa Gartner, sophomore Jenny Moylan and frosh Anita Menden placed 10th in a 27-team field in 11:46.03.

Friday's attendance of 17,050 was the second highest first-day attendance in Relays history, behind the 17,100 in 1997. Saturday's competition at the 18,000- seat Jim Duncan Track is sold out, marking the 35th consecutive year that the second-day competition at the Relays has been a sellout.
