PURDUE OUTLASTS MINNESOTA SOFTBALL IN 16 INNINGS
4/29/2000 12:00:00 AM | Softball
The game is the third longest in Minnesota school history, and the longest since 1983. The Gophers played a 25-inning game against Texas-Arlington in 1980 and a 18-inning game against Northwestern in 1983.
Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a Morgan Holden triple and a sacrifice fly by Dana Ballard. Purdue tied the game in the seventh inning and took a 2-1 lead with a run in the 11th inning. Angel Braden hit her fifth home run of the year to tie the game in the bottom of the 11th. Purdue retook the lead in the top of the 13th, but Braden's sacrifice fly scored Tammi Hays in the bottom of the frame to tie the game, 3-3.
Minnesota will host Purdue in a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude the 2000 home season. Seniors Dana Ballard and Michelle Bennett will be honored before the game.
