MICHIGAN STATE EDGES MINNESOTA SOFTBALL IN WILD GAME

The two teams combined for 23 runs and 31 hits in the seven-inning game. The sixth inning was the only scoreless frame of the game. Michigan State's Stacey Phillips led all players with four hits, including her 11th home run of the season. Veronica Roberts, Jordanne Nygren and Morgan Holden each had three hits for Minnesota.
Minnesota took its only lead of the game in the second inning, erasing a 2-0 Michigan State advantage with a four-run inning. Allie Fisk hit a three-run triple, and Tammi Hays plated Fisk with an infield single to give the Gophers a 4-2 lead. Michigan State responded with five runs in the third inning to take a 7-4 lead. Minnesota tied the game in the top of the fourth inning at 7-7 with a Roberts run-scoring triple and two wild pitches, but the Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-7 lead. The Gophers batted around in the fifth inning to score three runs and tie the game, 10-10, before Michigan State responded with two runs to claim a 12-10 edge. Angel Braden singled home Nygren with a run in the seventh inning, but Minnesota left the potential tying run at second base.
The Gophers dropped to 22-17 overall, 0-5 in the Big Ten, while Michigan State improved to 25-14 overall, 3-2 in the Big Ten. Minnesota will play a single game at 11th-ranked Michigan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
