In the opener, the Wolverines scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners at first and third and one out, the Gophers made a throwing error on defense, allowing Michigan to score an unearned run. Michigan pitcher Marissa Young limited Minnesota to two infield singles by Jordanne Nygren and Allie Fisk. Gopher pitcher Angie Recknor did not allow an earned run and struck out four, but suffered the loss.
Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap. Nygren led off the inning with a single, and Amy Hafemeyer replaced her as the runner at first base. After a sacrifice and a groundout, Dana Ballard grounded a single into left field, scoring Hafemeyer. The Wolverines tied the game in the third inning and Michigan's Melissa Gentile homered to lead off the fourth inning to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. Michigan scored two insurance runs in the fifth inning to complete the scoring. Marie Barda limited the Gophers to the two second-inning hits and struck out six.
The Gophers continue their season Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Drake on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
