teaTwo-time All-American and 1998 NCAA Champion James McLean fired a season-best round of 66 on Saturday to lead the University of Minnesota men's golf team to a fifth-place finish in the NCAA Central Regional and its third consecutive berth in the NCAA Championships. The regional was hosted by Southwest Texas State University and held at the Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas. The top nine teams in the 27-team regional earned berths to the NCAA Championships.

The Golden Gophers posted four scores of par or better for a final round team score of 10-under par 274, third-best among teams on Saturday and the fourth-best team round of the tournament. Along with McLean's five-under par 66, senior Dave Gunderson of Stillwater, Minn., posted a three-under par 68, senior All-American Martin LeMesurier carded a two-under par 69, and freshman Ben Meyers contributed an even-par score of 71. McLean finished the 140-player field in eighth place individually at four-under par 209 for the 54-hole event.

Texas captured the team title, followed by Kent State, Oklahoma State, Houston, and the Golden Gophers. Minnesota, ranked 49th in the latest MasterCard team poll, finished ahead of six teams rated above them in the most recent team listings.

Jon Mills of Kent State earned the individual title with a 54-hole total of 11-under par 202.

The Golden Gophers will now advance to the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Championships hosted by Auburn University from May 31 - June 3. Minnesota finished seventh in the 1998 event in Albuquerque, N.M., where McLean won his NCAA individual title, and 11th last season when the Golden Gophers hosted the event at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. A total of 30 teams qualify for the four-day tournament.
