title
Christine Gulbrandsen won her third Big Ten title in the triple but Indiana, scoring 98 points on the final day, surpassed Minnesota for the team title at the Big Ten Championships.
The Hoosiers' sprinters accounted for the bulk of the team's 98 points Sunday, scoring 59 points in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes and the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, as the they finished with 135 points, beating out Minnesota, which had a best-ever point-total of 118 for its highest conference finish.
Gulbrandsen, a two-time indoor triple jump champion, won her first outdoor title by jumping 43 feet, nine and three-quarter inches on her final jump of the competition. She had fouled on her three previous attempts before landing the winning jump, which was an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, on the next-to-last attempt of the competition.
"It's a great feeling," she said. "I've been waiting for that jump all year. I've been injured but I knew I had it in me.
"It was frustrating to foul three times in a row when I knew the jumps were far. I kept moving back and I finally hit the board."
Minnesota's highest-scoring event on the day came in the discus, where Aubrey Schmitt, Nicole Chimko and Brenda Meyer all placed, finishing second, fourth and seventh, respectively.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Shani Marks, Amber Day, Neketa Sears and Jessica Shuster finished third and Tanna-Marie Simmons, unranked in the 800-meter run, finished fourth.
The NCAA Championships, which Gulbrandsen and Linda Lindqvist have automatic qualifying marks for, are May 31-June 4 at Duke University in Durham, N.C.
