1The University of Minnesota men's track and field team fell short of capturing its third consecutive Big Ten Outdoor Championship crown Sunday as the Golden Gophers posted a second place finish with 105.5 points at the Big Tens in Iowa City, Iowa.

Wisconsin, who also won this year's Big Ten Indoor Championships, claimed the outdoor title with 155 points while Ohio State took third with 103 points.

Senior Eric Pierce finished second in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:44.49 while junior Tom Gerding also placed second in the 400m dash with a 46.27 mark to pace the Golden Gophers. In addition, Minnesota finished in the top three in two relay events placing second in the 4x400m and third in the 4x100m. The Golden Gophers' 4x400m relay team of Bob Quade, Adam Freed, Gerding, and Andy Wohlin posted a time of 3:06.65 while the 4x100 unit of Fred Rodgers, Matt Taylor, Freed, and Steve Burkholder finished with a mark of 40.17. Freshman Andrew McKessock also placed third in the 1,500m run with a time of 3:46.94.

Although Minnesota's streak of Big Ten Outdoor Championships came to an end, the Golden Gophers were able to garner the 2000 Big Ten All-Sports title since they placed higher than Ohio State. This year's All-Sports Championship marks Minnesota's third in its last four years.
