GOPHERS SEND FOUR TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Chimko will compete in the javelin and discus for the time. She has earned All-American honors in both events, placing third in the javelin in 1998 and seventh in the discus in 1999. She enters competition ranked 10th in the javelin, with a throw of 50.96 meters (167 feet, two inches), and 12th in the discus, with a throw of 53.76m (176-4).
Schmitt has qualified for the shot put and discus in each of her three seasons at Minnesota. Last weekend, she won her third consecutive outdoor Big Ten title in the shot put and placed second in the discus. She is a two-time All-American indoors in the shot put, having placed second in 1999 and seventh this year. She is ranked 12th in the shot put, with a throw of 15.78m (51- 9 1/4), and 17th in the discus, with a throw of 52.92m (173-7).
Nimtz is making her second appearance in the 10,000- meter run and third overall championship appearance, having competed in the 5,000-meter run indoors this season. Her time of 34 minutes, 31.23 seconds at the Big Ten Championships last weekend ranks her 17th in this year's field. She placed 16th in 1999.
Howard, a three-time Division II All-American at Minnesota-Duluth before transferring to Minnesota, makes her first Division I appearance in the hammer throw. The Big Ten runner-up enters the competition as the 15th seed with a throw of 59.16m (194-1).
Two Golden Gophers posted automatic qualifying efforts at the Big Ten Championships last weekend but will not compete at the NCAA Championships. Senior Christine Gulbrandsen's triple jump effort was made with a excessive wind while sophomore Linda Lindqvist, who won her second Big Ten javelin title with her only throw of the season, will not compete due to an elbow injury.
