GULBRANDSEN, SCHMITT NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT

Gulbrandsen is Minnesota's school record holder in the pole vault and the triple jump, both indoors and outdoors. Last weekend at the Big Ten meet, she won her third conference title and first outdoors by taking the triple jump with a mark of 43-9 3/4. The leap, her final of the competition, set a Big Ten meet record and reset her school record. Gulbrandsen scored 19 points in the meet, second on the Gopher squad, adding a third-place finish in the pole vault and a sixth-place finish in the long jump. Gulbrandsen has a 3.70 GPA, majoring in German and international relations.
Schmitt is the dominant competitor in the Big Ten in the shot put. She won her third consecutive outdoor conference shot put title last Saturday with a mark of 51-1 1/2. Schmitt was Minnesota's top scorer at the Big Ten meet, scoring 21 of Minnesota's 118 points, helping the Gophers to a second-place finish for the first time in school history. In addition to the shot put title, Schmitt finished second in the discus and sixth in the hammer. She has a 3.50 GPA, majoring in biology.
Schmitt is one of four Gophers that will compete at the NCAA Championships, announced today by the NCAA. The meet will be held May 31-June 3 at Duke University in Durham, N.C. The complete list of Gophers to participate in the national meet:
