LOWNEY FINISHES THIRD AT PAN AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

CalUniversity of Minnesota redshirt freshman Garrett Lowney won two of three matches to post a third place finish at the Pan American Championships in Cali, Colombia.

Lowney garnered a bronze medal in the 213.75-pound weight class as the United States placed second in the tournament behind Cuba, while Venezuela finished third. The native of Appleton, Wis., pinned Orellano (El Salvador) in 33 seconds and decisioned Torres of Venezuela 9- 4. Lowney then lost by referee decision to Reynaldo Pena of Cuba 1-1, ot, 9:00.

At this year's Pan American Championships, the United States qualified to compete in the 2000 Olympic Games at both 127.75 and 167.5 pounds. With the two individual titles, the U.S. has now qualified for the Olympics at all eight Greco-Roman weight classes.
