GOLDEN GOPHERS TIED FOR 13TH AT NCAA GOLF

Consistent play paced the Golden Gophers in day one, with senior Dave Gunderson of Stillwater, Minn., leading the way with a one-under par score of 71. Three of the other four golfers in the Minnesota lineup posted one-over par scores of 73, including All-Americans Martin LeMesurier and James McLean.
The Golden Gophers, who were seeded 23rd in the 30-team event, must be in 15th place or better after tomorrow's second round to survive the 36-hole cut. The top 15 teams after tomorrow's round will play the final two rounds of the tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Texas jumped out to a huge lead after the first round, posting a team score of 16-under par 272 for an eight-stroke lead over second-place Georgia Tech. The Golden Gophers are tied for 13th with the host school, Auburn.
David Gossett of Texas blistered the course for a nine-under par score of 63 for the individual lead after one round. Teammate J.J. Wall of Texas is two shots back after carding a seven-under par 65.
Minnesota is only four shots out of fifth place, despite its current 13th place standing.
The tournament continues with the second round on Thursday at Opelika, Ala.
