GOPHER WOMEN COMPETE AT FIRST DAY OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

TrackMinnesota senior Beth Howard and junior Corinne Nimtz both competed at the first day of the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Durham, N.C., Wednesday.

Howard took part in her first Division I championship, placing 12th in the hammer throw with an effort of 57.50 meters (188 feet, eight inches). She entered the competition seeded 15th.

Nimtz, the 17th seed in her race, competed in the 10,000-meter run for the second consecutive year. She repeated her 16th-place finish of a year ago by finishing in 35 minutes, 27.21 seconds.

Thursday, junior Aubrey Schmitt will compete in two events and senior Nicole Chimko is also scheduled to compete.

The duo take part in the discus at 4:30 p.m. EDT with Schmitt also competing in the shot put at 7:30.
