GOPHERS VICTORIOUS AT IOWA TWILIGHT INVITATIONAL

The Gophers edged the host Hawkeyes by three points with Illinois State third with 122.5 points, Western Michigan was fourth with 119.5 points and Southwest Missouri State was fifth with 71 points.
Senior Nicole Chimko was Minnesota's only double winner. She won in both the discus, with a throw of 166 feet, eight inches, and the javelin, with a throw of 161-6. Both were NCAA provisional qualifying throws.
Senior Beth Howard won the hammer throw with a toss of 189-4 while junior Aubrey Schmitt won the shot put with a throw of 49-4 1/2.
Minnesota got one more field event win as senior Christine Gulbrandsen was victorious in the pole vault with an effort of 11-6 1/4.
On the track, the 4x400-meter relay team of seniors Alisa Gartner and Neketa Sears, sophomore Amber Day and frosh Allyson DeVries won in a time of three minutes, 43.81 seconds.
The distance contingent also added to the winning effort. The Gophers claimed the top four spots in the 3,000-meter run as senior Rasa Michniovaite led the way in 9:43.85. Senior Minna Haronoja was won the 1,500- meter run in 4:38.72.
Minnesota returns to action Saturday when it hosts the Minnesota Qualifier in a final tuneup before returning to Iowa for the Big Ten Championships, May 19-21.
