6/1/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

GranThe University of Minnesota men's golf team remained in a tie for 13th place after a second straight team round of two-over par 290 following 36 holes of the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Championships at Grand National Golf Club in Opelika, Ala.

The Golden Gophers survived the halfway point cutdown for the third consecutive season, which slices the 30-team field in half for the final two rounds of the event. Minnesota finished seventh in the 1998 NCAA Championships and 11th in last season's event held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Minnesota assured themselves of a top 15 finish, which marks the first time in 56 years (1942-1944) that the program has posted three straight top 15 finishes in the nation. The Golden Gophers were sixth in 1942, fourth in 1943, and second in 1944.

Freshman Ben Meyers of Frankston, Victoria, Australia led the Golden Gophers on Thursday with a one-under par score of 71. Meyers is in a tie for 28th place individually with a two-day total of even-par 144.

Freshman Wilhelm Schauman rebounded from an opening day score of 81 to post an even-par round of 72, while 1998 NCAA Champion James McLean continued his steady play with an even-par score of 72.

Oklahoma State leads the team portion of the event with a two-day score of 19-under par. Texas is one shot behind at 18-under par, with Georgia Tech in third at 14-under par. Charles Howell of Oklahoma State and David Gossett of Texas are tied for the individual lead at 11-under par 133.

Georgia Tech's Matt Kuchar and Texas' Gossett are both U.S. Amateur Open Champions and will be paired together in round three of the championships. Kuchar won the Open in 1997 while Gossett won it in 1999.

Georgia and Wake Forest will tee off at 7:15 am Friday in order to break a tie for 15th place and the final spot after the 36-hole cut. All five golfers on each team will compete on the 18th hole with the low four scores counting towards breaking the tie. Half of the 30-team field make the second round cut along with the top nine individuals among the 15 teams not making the cut.
