SANDEN ELECTS TO LEAVE BASKETBALL TEAM; TAKE MEDICAL WAIVER

faSenior center Kyle Sanden has elected to forego his senior season and take a medical waiver on his scholarship after discussing the matter with his family, University doctors and the Golden Gopher coaching staff. Sanden has been plagued with medical issues since arriving at the University of Minnesota in 1996.
"This was a difficult thing for Kyle to do," said Head Coach Dan Monson. "He is a fierce competitor and loves the game, but his long term health is more important than basketball. We will miss his size and experience, but feel this is the right decision and we wish him the best."
Sanden is eligible to apply for a medical waiver on his scholarship so he can continue his schooling. His basketball scholarship will be given to the NCAA as part of Minnesota's self-imposed sanctions on the basketball program. Minnesota will play the 2000-2001 season with 10 scholarship players.
