SCHMITT NAMED SECOND-TEAM GTE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN

fourMinnesota junior Aubrey Schmitt, a three-time All- American in the shot put, was named to the at-large GTE Academic All-America second team.

A four-time Big Ten champion in the shot, Schmitt carries a 3.50 grade point average and is majoring in biology. She was one of just three Big Ten student- athletes to earn a spot on either the first, second or third team and the conference's only track and field representative.

During her three years at Minnesota, Schmitt is the school's all-time leader in NCAA Championship event appearances with 10. She has competed at the NCAA Championships in the indoor and outdoor shot put and the discus every year and also participated in the weight throw this season.

She placed seventh in the indoor shot put and sixth outdoors to All-American honors this season. She was the indoor runner-up in 1999.

Schmitt has also won the Big Ten outdoor shot put title in each of her three seasons and was also the 1999 indoor champion. She led the Gophers with 21 points at this year's outdoor meet, placing first in the shot put, second in the discus and sixth in the hammer throw, helping the team to a second-place finish, it's best showing in the 18-year history of the Big Ten Championships.

Earlier, Schmitt was named first-team academic All- District V, the second year in which she has earned that honor.
