38 WOMEN STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN RECOGNITION

Eight members of the national champion women's hockey team earned academic recognition. Senior Shannon Kennedy, who received the WCHA-Women's League Co- Student-Athlete of the Year award, has a 3.02 GPA in education. Sophomore Laura Slominski leads the team with a 3.75 GPA in psychology. Other hockey student-athletes honored are juniors Angela Borek, Winny Brodt, Emily Buchholz, Erica Killewald and Kris Scholz, along with sophomore Crystal Nicholas.
Junior Aubrey Schmitt, who won her third consecutive Big Ten outdoor shot put title and earned her third All- America honor this season, is one of 14 track and field athletes to receive academic honors. She has a 3.50 GPA in biology. Senior Christine Gulbrandsen, a three-time triple jump champion, has a 3.70 in German and international relations. Junior Corinne Nimtz, who became just the second Minnesota athlete to compete at the NCAA Championships for cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, has a 3.92 GPA in marketing. Senior Beth Howard, the Big Ten champion for the weight throw, placed 12th at the national championships in the hammer throw and earned conference academic recognition with a 3.23 GPA in art.
Three members of the tennis team, which competed in its first-ever conference title match in 2000, garned academic awards. Sandra Olsen, the Big Ten Women's Tennis Freshman of the Year, has a 3.16 GPA. Senior Kim Simonsen, who earned the conference's co-women's tennis player of the month honors for April, has a 3.42 GPA in kinesology. Sophomore Jennifer Howard has a 3.70 GPA in human resource development.
The softball team placed seven members on the all- conference team, led by junior Morgan Holden's 3.74 GPA in health science. The golf team had six student- athletes named to the academic all-conference team. Sophomore Megan Stier, who was named to the National Golf Coaches Association's all-scholar team, has a 3.41 GPA in marketing.
