GOLDEN GOPHER FOOTBALL TO HONOR RAY CHRISTENSEN

wilRay Christensen, who is entering his 50th and final season as the voice of the Golden Gophers, will be honored in events surrounding Minnesota's season opener vs. UL Monroe. The 2000 season opener will be Christensen's 500th career Golden Gopher football broadcast.

Entering the final season of his broadcasting career, the legendary Christensen has called a monumental 499 football games and 1,278 basketball games (44 seasons) for the Maroon and Gold.

The first 10,000 fans to enter the gates at the season opener will receive a Ray Christensen commemorative lapel pin. Christensen will also be honored during a special halftime ceremony at the game. A complete listing of the week's events honoring Christensen is listed below:

Thursday-Friday, August 24- 25
WCCO's Dave Lee and Kim Jefferies will broadcast live at the Minnesota State Fair. Listeners are invited to visit the WCCO booth to share their favorite Ray Christensen memories from 7-9 a.m. each day. Tickets to the season opener will be awarded to those with the best memories.

Saturday, August 26
WCCO will sponsor a Ray Christensen sound-alike contest from 3-5 p.m. at the WCCO State Fair booth. For more information call the WCCO promotions department at (612) 370-0611.

Sunday, August 27
U of M Day at the State Fair. Christensen will join Coach Glen Mason and the 2000 team captains on the WCCO "Sports Huddle" show with Sid Hartman and Dave Mona.

Saturday, September 2
Season opener vs. UL Monroe at the Metrodome at 11:10 a.m. First 10,000 fans will receive a special Ray Christensen lapel pin. Christensen will be honored in a special halftime ceremony. Two- for-one group tickets (20 or more).
