expUniversity of Minnesota head women's rowing coach Wendy Davis announced the hiring of Maggie Romens as second assistant rowing coach. Romens begins her duties immediately.

"Maggie brings solid experience and knowledge to her position," said Davis. "She knows just what is needed to round out our coaching staff. I couldn't be more pleased to have Maggie on board."

Romens served as an assistant coach for Michigan State University the past two seasons. During her tenure, the team participated in the NCAA Championships twice, placing eighth in 1999. At the 2000 Big Ten Championships, she coached the varsity four to a third- place finish and the second varsity four to a second- place showing.

Romens was an assistant coach at the U.S. National Rowing Team's development camp in June and an assistant coach at the U.S. Naval Academy rowing camp the past two summers. Romens was the head coach for the Minneapolis Rowing Club's summer program for competitive female athletes during the summer of 1998.

A member of the University of Kansas varsity rowing team for one season, Romens was instrumental in the creation of the team. She helped lobby support to fund varsity women's rowing and soccer.

Romens earned second place at the Midwest Championships and fifth place at the collegiate nationals in 1996. She received the inaugural Coach's Award for a Career of Excellence. Prior to her varsity experience, she was a member of the University of Kansas Crew Club, serving as captain from 1993-94 while earning first place at the Midwest Championships in 1993 and fourth place at the national competition in 1993 and 1994.

Romens received a bachelor of science in journalism from Kansas in 1996.
