DENNIS DALE REPORTS FROM THE 2000 OLYMPICS IN SYDNEY

9/10/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving

areAlex and I have now been in Australia for two weeks. The Brazilian Olympic Swimming Team has been in Canberra, Australia training at the Australian Institute of Sport. Many of the Brazilian Teams are here as well (Boxing, Judo, Basketball, Volleyball, weightlifting, and triathlon). The training went very well for Alex until he came down with a flue bug and was unable to train Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday but did get back in the water today (Sunday). We are hoping it is out of his system.

The weather in Canberra is quite cool with highs some days in the upper 40's and it is very windy. However the people are exceptionally friendly and there are parks and colorful wildlife everywhere. We often see Kangaroos across the road from the pool and birds that are big and colorful. The Brazil officials have arranged bus tours to see some of their major sights such as the War Museum, Parliament, the Capitol, and flea market. If we drive 30 minutes to the west we reach the outback's which is just vast uninhabited space. Although Australia is the size of the USA it has 1/25th the population.

On Tuesday we leave Canberra and move to Sydney and move into the Olympic Village. All of us are restless and anxious for the move. Sydney will be a lot warmer, and moving into the Olympic Village will be exciting. Also we look forward to practicing in the Olympic pool. Alex competes in the 100 Back on Sunday the 17th and swims on the 400 Medley Relay on Saturday the 23rd.

Yoav Meiri is also in Canberra training with the Israel Team, but they are training at a different pool. Although Yoav and I have not seen each other (they are about 20 Km away) we do talk on the phone. His training is going very well.

Allen Ong and Keam Ang are with the Malaysian team in Melbourne and we look forward to seeing each other in Sydney.
