SOCCER WINS SECOND STRAIGHT SHUT OUT
9/3/2000 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
blaThe University of Minnesota soccer team improved its record to 2-1-0 on the season with a 1-0 victory over Iowa State on Sunday. The shutout is the second consecutive match the Golden Gophers have blanked their opponent with a 1-0 score.
A physical match resulted in a combined 31 fouls being whistled but it was the Gophers who took advantage of a Cyclone foul to tally the winning goal. In the 30th minute of play, Juli Montgormery blasted a free kick from 35 yards out that Iowa State's goalkeeper Elizabeth Chapman tipped but could not prevent from crossing the goal line.
The Gopher defense stifled the Iowa State offense as Minnesota doubled-up on the Cyclones in shots, 18-9. Gopher goalkeeper Julie Eibensteiner needed to make just two saves to collect the shutout victory.
