Nimtz finished the 6,000-meter course in 22:06.4, defeating Eggleston by 17 seconds. Sophomore Chrissy Eid was third and frosh Darja Vasiljeva fourth. Drake's Tracey Bearden finished fifth to prevent the Gophers from sweeping the meet.
The race was named in memory of former Drake coach Gary Osborn, a longtime friend of Minnesota coach Gary Wilson, who passed away in May. The two teams were meeting for the seventh consecutive year in the season opener, all seven of which have been won by the Gophers.
Minnesota, ranked 15th in the FinshLynx Preseason Poll, is off for two weeks before returning to host the Roy Griak Invitational, Sept. 23, at 12 noon.
