1/18/2001 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

ColeUniversity of Minnesota junior Travis Cole joined the Golden Gopher baseball team on the field for practice yesterday. It was Cole's first organized practice since high school. The 6-3, 210-pound Cole quarterbacked the Minnesota football team to a 6-6 record and the Micronpc.com Bowl earlier this year, and hopes to carry some of that success over into the baseball season. Cole will wear number 17, and plans to vie for a spot on the mound. The Lake Oswego, Ore. native was a 52nd round draft choice by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1997 Major League Baseball amateur draft and was an all-league selection his senior year in high school.

The Golden Gophers open up their baseball schedule this year with their 10th annual Pro-Alumni game, sponsored by Galyan's. The 2001 roster will compete against former dugout greats on Monday, Feb. 5 at the Hubert H. Humphery Metrodome. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35. Admission to the game is just $6. For more information regarding the game, or to order tickets, please call (612) 624-8080 or 1-800-UGOPHER.
