GOPHER WOMEN LOSE AT WISCONSIN

The Badgers (10-6, 4-2), the tallest team in the Big Ten, used its height advantage to out-rebound the Golden Gophers by a 44-31 margin, with 21 of Wisconsin's boards coming on the offensive end.
The Gophers hung with the Badgers in the first half. Freshman guard Lindsay Whalen scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes of the game to help forge a 21-21 tie. Wisconsin outscored Minnesota 21-9 in the remainder of the half to take a 42--30 lead at intermission and the Badgers never looked back.
Wisconsin expanded its lead to as much as 27 points in the second half behind the play of 6-5 sophomore center Nina Smith. Smith scored 11 of her 19 points in the second period and finished the game hitting on 7-of-11 from the floor.
Whalen finished with 24 points to lead all scorers. Freshman forward Kadidja Andersson was the only other Gopher to score in double figures with 15 points. Point guard Ozlem Piroglu, who missed the Gophers' last three games with a knee injury, returned to the starting lineup and contributed six points and seven assists.
LaTonya Sims led the Badgers with 20 points. Oakdale, Minn., native Jesse Stomski tallied a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Minnesota (7-9, 0-5) continue their Big Ten season on Sunday when the Gophers host Northwestern. Tipoff is set for noon at the Sports Pavilion.
