MEN'S TRACK PERFORMS WELL AT MINNESOTA OPEN

SaturdayTwo members of the University of Minnesota men's track and field team took first place honors and several others placed in the top five of their events at the Minnesota Open indoor track meet Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. Redshirt freshman Will McComb won the mile run with a time of 4:15.27 and senior Mark Fahey won the weight throw with a toss of 56-1 3/4.
Several other Gophers performed well in their second meet of the 2001 indoor season. Matt Taylor finished third in the 60m dash. Bob Quade took fourth in the 400m dash as an unattached athlete. Brian Meyer and Toby Henkels each placed second in the 600m and 800m respectively. Minnesota swept the top four places in the mile with Martin Robeck (as an unattached athlete), Neil Hanson and Joe Corr took second, third and fourth behind McComb. Ryan Melena finished fourth in the 60m hurdles.</ p> In the field events, Mike Ehlers took fourth in the shot put. Ben Meyer finished right behind Fahey in the weight throw and Lynden Reder placed fourth. Marc Johannsen finished fifth as an unattached athlete in the high jump. Minnesota had two place in the top five in the pentathlon, both as unattached athletes. Freshmen Travis Brandstatter and Jason Swenson took second and fifth respectively.

Wisconsin's TJ Nelson set a new fieldhouse record and achieved a NCAA provisional time with a 7.83 in the 60m hurdles. Also competing was 2000 Olympian and former Golden Gopher Keita Cline. Cline took second in the 60m with a time of 6.89 and sixth in the 400m with a time of 50.19.
The Golden Gophers will continue their season next week with another home meet. The Minnesota Maroon and Gold Open is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
