MinneThe Minnesota Golden Gopher men's basketball team (15-5, 3-4) fell below the .500 mark in Big Ten play as they lost 83-68 to the Purdue Boilermakers (13-6, 5-3) in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Minnesota kept the game within five for most of the first half with tenacious defense, a sometimes troubling full-court press and excellent offensive rebounding. Their rebounding efforts were futile, however, as the Golden Gophers couldn't get a shot to fall late in the half. Purdue went on a 10-0 run to end the half and send Minnesota to the lockerroom down 44-27.

The Golden Gophers came out of the break firing, as their offensive play caught up with their defense. They went on a run of their own, outscoring the host Boilermakers 18-6 in the first five minutes of the second half and cutting the Purdue lead to five. The Boilermakers hot shooting put Minnesota down by 16 at 68-52 with 7:31 left in the game. The Golden Gophers were never able to recover, though they continued to fight, the Boilermaker offense was nearly unstoppable.

Senior Terrance Simmons led the Golden Gophers with 17 points. Junior Dusty Rychart scored 13 points. Sophomore Shane Schilling, who had been plagued by a shooting slump in Big Ten play scored in double figures with 15 for the first time since scoring 12 against Wisconsin on Jan. 6. John-Blair Bickerstaff dished out a team-high seven assists

Purdue's Carson Cunningham led all-scorers with 21 points. John Allison had a game-high 8 rebounds and scored 15.

Freshman forward Michael Bauer, the game's leading rebounder in the first half, went down with a broken arm with 14:32 remaining in the game. He came down on his left arm after reaching for a rebound off the offensive glass. Bauer scored 12 points and pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds before leaving the game.

Matt Anderle, a walk-on who plays football for the Golden Gophers, made his first appearance on the basketball court. He entered the game with just under two minutes remaining.

The Golden Gophers will be on the road again Wednesday, January 31. They will take on Iowa in Iowa City at 7 p.m.
