MINNESOTA ROLLS PAST BEMIDJI STATE 5-1

PeThe Golden Gopher men's hockey team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-1 win over Bemidji State at Mariucci Arena. Sophomore Pete Samargia made his third career start in goal and stopped 23-of-24 shots to earn his first-ever win. Minnesota hosts Michigan Tech next weekend.

Bemidji State played Minnesota even for most of the period, thanks to the play of goalie Grady Hunt. Hunt stopped 19 shots in the first period before Jeff Taffe got the Golden Gophers on the board with less than two minutes to play. Minnesota outshot BSU 20-2 in the stanza.

The Golden Gophers pulled away in the second, thanks to its special teams. Minnesota capitalized on a pair of power-plays with goals from Jordan Leopold, his eighth, and Matt Koalska, his eighth. Erik Westrum capped off the period with a short-handed goal at 16:39.

Minnesota upped the lead to 5-0, as freshman Paul Martin's slap shot found the back of the net for his second career goal. The Beavers managed to avoid the shutout as Miikka Lindholm got free on the breakaway and beat Samargia top-shelf.

Minnesota outshot Bemidji State 56-24 for the game. BSU had 16 shots in the third period, but just a total of eight in the first two.
