GOLDEN GOPHERS TAKE SEASON OPENER AGAINST MINNESOTA STATE, MANKATO

holThe University of Minnesota women's hockey team opened the season at Mariucci Arena with a 2-0 shutout over Western Collegiate Hockey Association opponent Minnesota State, Mankato. The Gophers now hold the all-time series at 15-0 against the Mavericks. Minnesota is 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in WCHA play.

Scoring her first goal of the year and 22 career goal was sophomore La Toya Clarke</ a>. Clarke shot the puck passed MSU goalie Shari Vogt at 17:04 of the first period on the team's second power-play opportunity of the night, which proved to be the gamewinner. Senior Laura Slominski and frosh Kelly Stephens each added assists to Clarke's goal. The team would hold on to a 1-0 advantage, until 12:43 of the third period when Stephens collected her first goal of the year and second point of the night. Slominski added an additional point for the night on Stephens' goal. For her performance, Stephens earned the first star of the game. Sophomore Stephanie Johnson had her second shutout of her career and second shutout against Mankato. Johnson had 21 saves, while Vogt added 35 in the effort. The Gophers were 1-4 on power-play opportunities, while MSU was 0-1.

The two teams battle again at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night at Mariucci Arena.
