GOPHERS SLIP TO NORTHWESTERN IN OVERTIME, 2-1
10/12/2001 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
Sophomore forward Rachael Roth (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) put the Gophers on the board late in the second half. Senior midfielder Alison Rackley (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) trailed the ball going down, putting the ball through. Roth took a touch toward the goal and shot into the far left of the net.
With one minute remaining, it seemed that Minnesota had sealed the victory. But with 27 seconds left in regulation, Wildcat Katie Hertz scored off an assist from teammate Katie Kovatch sending the game into overtime.
Two minutes into overtime the Wildcats scored again to end the game and to end Northwestern's four-game losing streak.
Northwestern outshot Minnesota 15-8. The teams had a total of four corner kicks apiece and 22 fouls each.
Senior goalkeeper Julie Eibensteiner (North Oaks, Minn./Totino Grace) recorded six saves while the opponent goalie had none.
Minnesota will head to Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 14, to face the University of Wis. Badgers at 1 p.m.
