GOPHERS SWEEP MINNESOTA STATE TO OPEN THE 2001-02 SEASON

areThe seventh-ranked Minnesota women's hockey team took the second game of the series in a 4-1 sweep over Minnesota State, Mankato. It was the 16th win over the Mavericks in four years. The Gophers are now 2-0-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while MSU drops to 0-2-0 to start the 2001-02 conference campaign.

Minnesota's Laura Slominski took a shot in front of the net at 7:11 of the first period as it hit the right corner passing through MSU goalie Shari Vogt. It was the first goal for Slominski and her third point of the year. Minnesota tacked on two goals in the second period by frosh Kelly Stephens at 3:25, while junior Ronda Curtin added one at 9:33 on a power-play opportunity. Rookie Noelle Sutton scored her first collegiate point with her assist on Curtin's goal. The Mavericks would score their first goal of the weekend as Amanda Osborn cut the deficit to a 3-1 game at 14:58 of the second period. However, the Gophers would add a goal at 5:03 of the third period to put the Gophers back to a three-goal margin. Minnesota outshot MSU 39-25 and was 1-4 on the power play, while MSU finished the contest 0-2.

Minnesota's next competitor will be the defending NCAA champions, the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Oct. 20-21. Both games are scheduled for a 2:05 p.m. start at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center in Duluth, Minn. Next home action for the Gophers will be Nov. 2 and 3 when Minnesota hosts WCHA rival, Ohio State at Mariucci Arena. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. start.
