MINNESOTA FINISHES STRONG, GUARANTEED SPOTS IN NEXT YEAR'S REGATTA

The Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass., ended today with both Minnesota boats qualifying for next year's races. The Varsity 8+ and the Varsity 4+ boats finished close enough to the winning time to guarantee them spots. To automatically qualify, a boat must finish within five percent of the winning boat's time.

In race action today, the Varsity 4+ boat finished10th out of 31 boats in the Championship Fours race. Germania 1969 came in first with a time of 19:22.96, followed by US Rowing in second and the Danish Rowing Federation in third. Minnesota finished in a time of 19:16.99. The boat consisted of Libby Sharrow (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) at coxswain, Beth Hornby (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kelvin), Melissa Roche (Albert Lea, Minn.), Kathryn Frankson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South) and Amber Riopel (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander).

In yesterday's races, Minnesota's Varsity 8+ boat was disqualified due to a logistical error. The boating list was different from who actually competed in the race. Head Coach Wendy Davis is trying to get the disqualification lifted and allow a third place finish to stand.

Next up, the Gophers travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Head of the Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 28.
