GOLDEN GOPHERS BRUSH OFF COLGATE 8-0 IN NONCONFERENCE TILT

goaThe second-ranked University of Minnesota men's hockey team trounced ECAC foe Colgate 8-0 Friday night at Mariucci Arena as 13 different Golden Gophers tallied at least one point. Minnesota senior goaltender Adam Hauser earned the win and established the new school record for shutouts with the eighth shutout of his career.

Freshman defenseman Keith Ballard opened the rout with his first goal as a Golden Gopher at 2:06 of the first period with assists going to Nick Angell and Garrett Smaagaard. It was Smaagaard's first career point for Minnesota. Paul Martin picked up the second lamplighter 10 minutes later on the power play. Jeff Taffe and John Pohl were credited with the helpers.

Minnesota's first-period barrage continued as Matt Koalska scored at 17:19 of the first stanza. Freshman Barry Tallackson earned the assist. Troy Riddle closed out the first period with the first of his two goals. Erik Wendell and Koalska garnered the assists on the power-play marker. Minnesota outshot the Raiders 14-5 in the opening period.

It took until 12:39 of the second to make the score 5-0 as Nick Anthony scored the first of his two lamplighters on assists from Mike Erickson and Angell. Taffe added the second and final goal of the period on a beautiful one-timer on the power play at 13:40. Paul Martin and Pohl garnered the assists.

Minnesota was held scoreless in the third period until the final two minutes when Riddle and Anthony tallied their second goals of the game within 40 seconds. Riddle notched his unassisted slapshot goal from the high slot at 18:37. Anthony then scored at 19:14 pn a breakaway to close out the rout with assists going to Erickson and Joey Martin.

Minnesota doubled up Colgate on the shot board, outshooting the Raiders 36-18. The Golden Gophers ended the game 3-for-7 on the man advantage and pushed their scoring average to 7.02 goals per game. The Golden Gophers and Raiders finish the nonconference series Saturday at Mariucci Arena at 7:05 p.m.
