GOPHERS WIN 2-1 IN OVERTIME OVER MERCYHURST

MinnesotaThe fifth-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team played the Mercyhurst Lakers in nonconference action tonight in Erie, Pa. The Gophers won the contest in a 2-1 overtime thriller. Minnesota is now 3-1-1 overall.

In the first period, Minnesota took advantage of a power-play opportunity at 11:57 as senior Sarma Pone scored her first goal of the 2001-02 campaign with the assists going to senior forward Tracy Engstrom and sophomore La Toya Clarke. The Gophers would go into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.

The Lakers would tie up the game at 14:01 of the second period as Mercyhurst's Lindsay Barch shot the puck at Gopher goalie Brenda Reinen. The puck hit Reinen's stick and then found the back of the net.

The Gophers were outshot 12-6 in the third period, but kept the Lakers scoreless throughout the period and forced the game into overtime. At, 3:28 in overtime, it looked as if Minnesota would have the disadvantage as the Gophers would go into the penalty box on a cross-checking call. However, at 3:56, junior Ronda Curtin, who played defense, got a pass from senior Laura Slominski and scored a short-handed goal.
