GOPHER WOMEN'S GOLF PLACES FOURTH AT ALABAMA CAPSTONE

onThe Golden Gopher women's golf team completed its fall competition schedule with a fourth-place finish at the Alabama Capstone Intercollegiate Championship, at the Capstone Club in Brookwood, Ala., on Sunday. Minnesota carded rounds of 323, 329 and 322 to tally 974 and finished back Tennessee (946), Mississippi (971) and Missouri (972).

?This tournament was a difficult test of golf ? long rounds and extremely tough conditions,? said Minnesota head coach Melissa Arthur. ?I hope this tournament made us a better golf team.?

Alabama's Sarah Johnston captured medallist honors with a score of 231, 15 strokes over par.

Junior Karyn Stordahl paced the Gophers, tying for 13th place with a score of 240 after rounds of 78, 83 and 79. Entering the tournament, Stordahl was chasing the school record for the lowest fall average, but playing what Arthur called the toughest course she had seen for a collegiate tournament, fell short of the record by seven strokes. Stordahl completed the fall season with a 75.58 average, while Kate Hughes? 1998 record of 75.00 still stands.

Rookie Tai Kinney added another top 20 individual finish for the Gophers, tying for 17th. Kinney turned in rounds of 78, 83 and 81 to finish with a score of 242.

Sophomore Karen Quintelier was the most consistent Gophers, finishing in a tie for 27th at 249, with rounds of 83, 84 and 82.

Seniors Cindy Cannon and Megan Stier completed the Gopher contingent. Cannon tied for 43rd place at 254, after rounds of 88, 79 and 87. Stier tied for 53rd at 258, with rounds of 84, 94 and 80.
