FOUR GOPHERS PARTICIPATE IN THE WCHA ALL-STAR GAME

Sen Four members of the Minnesota women's hockey team participated in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association-Women's League All-Star game against the U.S. National Team Friday and Saturday night. Seniors Tracy Engstrom and Laura Slominski, junior Ronda Curtin and sophomore La Toya Clarke played in both games Friday at Madison, Wis., and Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

In Friday's action the U.S. National Team defeated the WCHA All-Star Team by a score of 3-0. After a scoreless first period, U.S. forward Jenny Potter scored a goal off a rebound at 4:55 to put the U.S. Team up 1-0 at the second intermission. In the third period, the U.S. Team scored two additional goals from Tricia Dunn and Katie King to put the U.S. Team to the 3-0 shutout. WCHA All-Star goalie Tuula Puputti (Minnesota-Duluth) stopped 47 of 50 shots on goal.

The All-Stars would look to break the scoreless streak at the Xcel Energy Center on Saturday, but did not do so until the 16:31 mark of the third period, when Hanne Sikio (Minnesota-Duluth) scored on a rebound from Kerry Weiland (Wisconsin) in front of 8, 473 fans. The U.S. National Team would however defeat the WCHA All-Stars by a score of 6-1.

Minnesota, ranked sixth in the preseason poll, opens the 2001-02 campaign against Minnesota State, Mankato Oct. 12-13 at Mariucci Arena. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
