MINNESOTA SKATES PAST MINNESOTA STATE, MANKATO 5-3

oLed by senior captains Jordan Leopold and John Pohl's two goals and one assist apiece, the University of Minnesota men's hockey team dropped Minnesota State, Mankato 5-3 in front of 9,804 fans at Mariucci Arena. Senior goaltender Adam Hauser got the win, stopping 24-of-27 shots in Minnesota's WCHA home-opening series.

The Golden Gophers got on the board first with Jeff Taffe's power play goal at 7:40 of the opening stanza. Paul Martin and Leopold assisted on the goal. The Mavericks responded seven minutes later, tying the score behind Jerry Cunningham's power play marker.

Leopold picked up his first lamplighter of the game 22 seconds into the second period when his wrist shot from the high slot beat MSUM goalie Jon Volp high on the glove side. The Mavericks bounced right back at 11:44 as B.J. Abel tied the score on the power play. Minnesota then turned it on and pulled away from MSUM. Pohl started it off at 15:33 on the power play. The senior from Red Wing, Minn., knocked in Jeff Taffe's shot on the right side to grab the lead. Grant Potulny picked up the second assist.

Leopold made it a two-goal lead at 18:36 of the second period when his shot from the point deflected off a MSUM player and past Volp. Pohl earned the single assist. The Mavericks tried to make the game interesting, scoring at 5:05 of the final period, but Pohl ended MSUM's rally, tallying his eighth goal of the season at 7:49 on the power play. Matt Koalska and Martin grabbed assists on the final marker.

For the game, Minnesota was 3-of-8 on the power play. The Golden Gophers and Mavericks meet again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Mariucci Arena to wrap up the series.
